George Square Proposal

Inspired by the recent controversy over the re-design of George Square, the Gallus Design Team have put forward their idea for an interim use of the site.

The Gallus Games is in two parts, our Scotland-wide finals will be held in a temporary recycled stadium two weeks before the official Commonwealth Games, and are proposed for a car park in Govan. Permission for this has stalled because the Water Row car park is in a conservation area. We are actively talking to the Planning Department for In Principle permission so that funds can be raised to pay for it.

This design is the centrepiece for our pop-up games which are the second part of our proposal and will happen all over the City at the same time as the official Games in 2014. Every lunchtime there will be Gallus Games that anyone can take part in, with guest commentators and Gallus medals for the winners. We will have GreenMachine Road sweeping races, Draw the Chambers competitions, Late for work races, and Mass Hula Hoop Displays.

The Gallus concept is informed by pastimes that everyone can take part in. Put two jumpers down on the grass and you have a football pitch, chalk on the pavement and you have a game of Peever. Aware that the George Square statues are held in some affection by the public, the Gallus Design Team have included the Sir Walter Scott column into the track. The figure of eight design means that everybody starts at the same point and runs the same distance.
